About Saffron
Saffron Building Society has been helping people save and borrow in the East of England since 1849. Founded as the Saffron Walden Second Building Society — a mouthful that was thankfully simplified over several mergers and name changes — the society has grown steadily over 175 years without ever converting to bank status or losing its mutual structure. It remains owned by its members, with no external shareholders, and continues to operate out of its Saffron Walden, Essex headquarters alongside eight branches across Essex, Suffolk and Hertfordshire.
The society crossed the £1 billion in assets mark in 2011 and has continued to grow since. The intermediary proposition is delivered through Saffron for Intermediaries, a dedicated platform for mortgage brokers and commercial finance advisers. Bridging and development finance were added to complement its established BTL and residential range — bringing the society's hallmark "if it makes sense we'll find a way" underwriting approach into the specialist short-term market.
All cases are manually assessed by Saffron's underwriting team, which considers each application on its individual merits. The society has built a particular reputation in the complex case space: unusual properties, non-standard income, multiple applicants and high-value transactions where mainstream lenders stop at the first hurdle.
